Kahanui is a land division that makes up most of the mauka lands. It was once the name of an ahupua‘a. Kahanui extends from Kauluwai in the south to the old lookout in the west to Ka ‘ohu in the east. In its simplest translation it means big place. Its wind is the ‘ai kūpala.
